playback singer chinmayi sripada has started a petition on the rape threat. She tweeted the petition saying, “Sign the petition. For women the world over.”Within 36 hours, about 40,000 people signed the petition.
The singer, who has been vocal on the Jallikattu issue recently, wrote in the petition that though she is used to being trolled on Twitter, violent threats that she has been receiving on the social media has “shaken and scared” her.
“Rape threats can never be OK. Rape is one of the worst forms of violence. Threats of rape are weapons used to subjugate women and silence them.
Twitter has recently announced a plan to tackle repeated abusers. “We’re taking steps to identify people who have been permanently suspended and stop them from creating new accounts,” the social media giant tweeted.
